SMASH LAB - A new performance art and live art scratch night from your hosts SKIPtheatre at The Book Club. Performance, ideas, interventions, lively feedback, debate, DJ’s and THEATRE-OKE.

By showcasing the crème de la crème of established and emerging artists in a bi-monthly explosive laboratory you can be part of exciting and innovative experiments and the progression of new work.

The night will be polished off with amazing music from guest DJ’s and your chance to get involved in our newly created ‘1 minute only THEATRE -OKE’.. yes like it says on the box – you will have 1 minute to get up and improvise with words, props and music. Confused?... Be-mused?... Amused?... Come and have a drink and a rant.

Our first night is on TUESDAY 7th JUNE. 8pm - midnight.

SKIPtheatre's Performances for 2011

SKIPtheatre are working on two performances for 2011. Here is a little insight into our works in progress...

The first to mention, as it fits with the cold whether we have at present, is an interactive and immersive performance based upon The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. As we work in a very visual method of initially creating images and scenarios, we have been inspired by the imagery he creates within this tale. We are also collecting ideas from looking through many an old book of the Victorian Pleasure Gardens, which will play a big part within the performance. In the summer of 2010 we experienced the delight of audiences of all ages exploring for themselves a journey through the site specific promenade performance, The Mermaid's Curse, and would like to explore the theatrical possibilities of this method further with this current project.

Our style and working method continues into our work in progress performance, So...? (working title) This project is an interactive performance/experience, which we are currently developing into a full scale performance for 2011. The performance explores all aspects of fashion consumerism and the current state of our ‘throw-away’ culture. In December 2010 we performed a scratch showing of our work in progress in an old leather factory in Whitechaple and had lots of really great feedback and ideas to help us carry the performance to the next level. We are very excited about presenting this project, so do come and join us behind the pristine rails of clothes when we present it!

You will hear it hear first! Or perhaps on Twitter, SKIPtheatre have recently joined and we are slowly getting up to speed flying with the flock!

Decadence and Descendants

A site specific performance, which took place in an empty mansion in Mayfair. A 17th Century lady and her two maids climb the stairs of an abandoned mansion only to descend again. Their journey is relentless; laughing and falling, running forwards and climbing backwards, on hands and knees with heads held high. The cycle cannot be broken.

This performance was part of the Da! Collectives MADA exhibition in January 2009.

On Ageing

This new devised performance by Fevered Sleep at the Young Vic in which seven children perform for an audience of adults.

The reviews have called it beautiful, funny and completely original. I found this peice to be both playful and profound. The production deals with the everyday fact of ageing. Children present different peoples experiences of ageing and much of the humour comes from hearing the children speak the lines of their elders "I think skin care is very important"! Hearing the children speak these lines is genius as it creates a real poinancy and in true Brechtian style using alienation to make strange and absurd the notions and human experience of ageing. The children also reflect on their own memories, reminding us of our own youth and also that the children themselves, although young, have aged and understand the process.

The sections that I enjoyed the most were those when the children lost themselves playing with the objects on stage, seemingly oblivious to the audience; reminding me of my own childhood memories.

In a society obsessed with ageing and plastic surgery this performance beautifully and cleverly highlights the human relationship with ageing and the passing of time.

The Mermaid’s Curse by SKIPtheatre

It was with a mixture of trepidation and even a little resentment that I crammed into the village hall at East Prawle last Saturday for SKIPtheatre’s production of The Mermaid’s Curse. My friends and many others were enjoying a sunny evening outside the Pigs Nose pub next door; I am no theatre goer and the prospect of community involvement and audience participation leaves me searching for the shadows. I was there as a sponsor (vegetables for the crew) and to see my daughter who, like many from the area, had become involved in the production to form a cast of musicians and actors varying from a small group of seasoned professionals to a rag tag group of village urchins who had participated in the workshops through the week.

Perhaps the suspiciously murky cider served in this makeshift nineteenth century “Union Inn” aided the transportation but, much to my surprise, I found myself completely gripped and even prompted to leave the security of the shadows to join in. Emerging periodically from this makeshift hostelry we were trooped around the village in groups (I was ushered by a crotchety Mrs Seabass) between scenes; a cliff top gateway where ship wrecked pirates argued over booty, a stone walls where, to a stunning backdrop of the English Channel behind, a siren called ships onto the rocks in the hope of being reunited with her pearls, or huddled into a secret garden where, along with twenty others I surprised myself by sniffing sage and chanting ‘oh secret queen of power at this enchanted hour’ orchestrated by the village mystic Ethel played by Charlotte Croft. Somehow I even found myself participating in a group SOS outside the village’s, now closed second pub. As the play progressed the draw of the pub lessened with each passing until the finale on the village green where the fabulously rakish pirate Nicolo Bezzo, played by Edward Akrout, got his comeuppance as the, audience, (now reunited and considerably enlarged by various hangers on including half a stagg party) cheered enthusiastically. Johnny Depp’s wonderful Jack Sparrow was not a patch on this. No mega budget screen production, however fine, could bring such a diverse group together to share an experience as SKIPtheatre had.

Like many local businesses, barely a day passes without a plea for sponsorship and inevitably most go straight to the bin but I have seldom been prouder than to think this brave production was partly fuelled by Riverford’s Vegetables. Laura, Charlotte and Chloe the three young directors / co-founders of SKIPtheatre and the mostly London based cast spent two weeks under canvas for meagre pay on a cliff top, first in Porlock in North Somerset before coming south to East Prawle in Devon. I salute their bravery and commitment and hope that in these cash strapped times of austerity that we somehow find a way to support them so they can return next year. They are welcome to as many of my vegetables as their thespian digestive systems can tolerate.

SKIPtheatre are recruiting a Producer to join their company. We are seeking an enthusiastic, hardworking and experienced producer to join our company and work with us on a variety of exciting projects.

We would also like the Producer to take a lead role with company development and management. This is an excellent opportunity to work with an innovative performance company who are taking London and the Southwest by storm.

Candidates must be able to commit the equivalent of one full day per week for a minimum of a year.

This is essentially an unpaid opportunity although payment may be available subject to funding and certain projects over the next year.

Person Specification:

This role would suit a recent graduate or someone at the beginning of their career interested in pursuing producing at a professional level.

A rare opportunity to be part of a new SKIPtheatre production!

‘Pirates of Prawle – A Night of Pandemonium’ is taking place in the seaside Devonshire village of East Prawle on 21st August. It will be a devised, interactive, promenade performance around the village, which then turns into a party in the hall of the Pigs Nose Inn with the Jive Jacks band performing. There will also be live music, singing and dancing throughout the performance, where the audience will be invited to get involved.

‘Pirates of Prawle’ is based on a newspaper article called 'A Night of Terror at Prawle' from the 1970's, which can be found on the wall at the Pigs Nose Inn. It is a treacherous tale of a shipwreck in the 1700’s and the terror that ensued around the village following one of the sailors sudden madness.

We are looking for adaptable performers, dancers, actors and an accordion player to become part of our company for a week of creativity in Devon! Please send your CV and examples of your work to Chloe at fillupfullstop 'at' hotmail.co.uk

The company will be camping in a nearby field for the week of the rehearsals and performance – Sunday 16th August- Sat 22nd August.

Commitment:
Performers will need to arrive in East Prawle on Sunday 16th for rehearsals starting on Monday 17th until Friday 21st for approx 4-6 hours a day. The performance will take place on the evening of Friday 21st August. Performers will be free to leave on Saturday 22nd August.

Fee:
This is an unpaid opportunity, but certain meals and the cost of a camping pitch for the week will be covered. You will need to supply all your own camping equipment.

The performance will be filmed and photographed by a professional camera man / photographer- of which all performers will get a copies if requested.

my site in space is a series of site-specific performance events. A group of artists work under time pressure to create performance in response to a space. Each event is ephemeral: created in a flash, never to be performed again.

The fourth version of my site in space will take place at Resistance Gallery, a double-height railway arch in Bethnal Green. Performances are on Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd Nov from 3pm.

SKIPtheatre are Charlotte Croft, Laura Hemming-Lowe and Chloe Stephens - three young artists intent on dragging theatre skipping into the 21st century. Their omnipresent skipping ropes have twirled and whirled at nearly every night worth going to, fashion shows, and if that’s not enough they can even be seen in Hatcham Socials ‘So Happy Making’ video. They’ve wooed passers by with their skipping demonstrations, dispensing free ropes amongst the mingling masses so we decided to get tangled up in their ropes long enough to ask them a few questions.

P.i.X: What was the motivation for starting SKIPtheatre?

Skiptheatre: To push the conventions and break down the barriers between music, fashion, art and theatre. We wanted to bring elements of theatre to an audience of young adults, music fans and party goers. We want to break away from conventional theatre and work in new spaces and for new theatre audiences.

P.i.X: You worked with Neils Children for a collaborative show at Offset,
have you done much work with bands before?

Skiptheatre: We first started collaborating with DJ's and then started working alongside bands. We performed in Hatcham Socials music video "So So Happy Making" directed by Nicola Probert and later collaborated with them to create an onstage version of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky for their single launch at the 100 Club. We have also collaborated with Cellist- Lucy Railton and Hip Hop rapper- Illa Man.

P.i.X: How much interaction is there between yourselves and the bands/DJ's
etc you perform with? Is it quite discussed and collaborative or do
you work in relative isolation and interpret the music in your own
way?

Skiptheatre: We have worked in both ways. For the performance with Neil’s Children at Offset they gave us complete freedom to create our own interpretation of the song. It came together for the first time live onstage! It’s exciting working in this way because you end up having to change things at the last minute due to lack of space, you have to be adaptable. When we worked with Hatcham on the Jabberwocky we had quite a few discussions about costume and performance style, we also had a few hours with them in a studio to rehearse prior to the show. It was good to work closely with them, especially as we were using our voices for that performance.

We'd love to work with bands over longer periods of time to create new pieces of work that become more like a dialog between the performer and the music.

P.i.X: Whats your record number of skips with a rope??

Skiptheatre: Laura’s is about 200 (pretty rubbish - she needs to give up smoking) We can all skip non-stop for about 3 minutes…. But we havn’t counted how many jumps that is!

P.i.X: What would be the dream site/environment/collaboration for a
SKIPtheatre performance?

Laura- The La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona... huge huge huge performance party... the most beautiful, interesting and challenging space to work in!

Charlotte- Collaborating with Bjork on a performance in an ice place in her native Iceland with the Aura borealis as our lighting! It would have to be filmed with a live feed back to the UK, and projected onto the Tate Modern for all who could not be in Iceland, a UK/Iceland party!

Chloe- I’d love to collaborate to create a performance with Vivienne Westwood, maybe in an abandoned old building somewhere in Engand. She’s recently worked with a theatre company called Knee High, she’s got a great imagination and sense of theatre.

WHY WE ALL LOVE POLAROIDS

... because they have a lovely nostalgic quality, because they develop before our eyes in an instant, each one has some worth unlike deletable digital images. Despite the price we use them sparingly to document our various performances. But we're not the only ones to be caught by the POLAROID craze. I found a website called "Polanoid", like Flickr it allows people to upload their photos to the internet- but strictly Polaroids.

Polaroids seem to reflect a trend in our generation- a trend for looking with nostalgia to the past while wanting the result NOW.

The Canary SKIP

SKIPtheatre teamed with Blooming Parentheses Productions to grace Canary Wharf with an interactive skipping performance. Filmed, edited and illustrated by William Pine.

The selection of the business world who did witness the event appeared to welcome this brief explotion of fun and free skipping ropes. The people that be, at the top of the tower of Canary Wharf, had other ideas and swiftly put a stop to the fun. The police told us to S T O P skipping and made this break from reality in the mundane day of a city worker very brief.

SKIPtheatre specialise in site-speific performance and theatrical events. Their work mixes devised theatre, interactive performance and live art. They bring an element of play, which involves audience participation, to music orientated environments. Expect a combination of absurd props and bespoke leotards.

SKIPtheatre also create tailor-made, highly exciting, Performance Parties and club nights. With an array of performance artists, circus acts, live art, installation, games, contemporary dance, film projections, theatrical environments and interactive skipping, all combined with a selection of the hottest bands and dj's in town.

SKIPtheatre have taken their interactive skipping routines nationwide, performing at last years
Glastonbury Festival, Love Box and at Camden People's Theatre. They have also performed at Shunt, Fabric, Adventures in the Beetroot Field (Bournemouth), Aganovich Fashion Show (London Fashion Week), at the celeb haunt Smash and Grab at Punk and at Foreign hosted by Jodie Harsh.

SKIPtheatre produced a live collaboration with the band Hatcham Social at the 100 Club earlier this year and have also worked with djʼs Into The Fray, Eeek Empire, Mac 3000, Stopmakingme, The Broken Hearts and The She Set. Their most recent work includes a music video for the band Neils Children.
